Why Emotional Control May Be Just as Important as Ball Control

Elite soccer players spend countless hours improving their first touch, passing accuracy, speed, and tactical awareness. But new research suggests another skill deserves just as much attention: the ability to recognize and regulate emotions.

A new study of professional female football players in Mexico found meaningful links between emotional awareness, decision-making, and cognitive performance. While the study was relatively small and exploratory, it reinforces something many coaches have observed for years: players don’t simply perform with their bodies—they perform with their minds.

For players, coaches, and clubs, that has important implications for how we train.

Soccer Is a Cognitive Sport

Modern soccer is often described as “physical chess.” Players must constantly scan the field, anticipate movement, suppress impulsive reactions, update tactical plans, and make split-second decisions under pressure. Sports scientists refer to these abilities as executive functions, which include:

  • Decision-making
  • Working memory
  • Planning
  • Inhibitory control (resisting poor decisions)
  • Cognitive flexibility

The researchers argue that these mental abilities are just as essential as technical and physical skills because they allow players to process enormous amounts of information in seconds while under intense emotional pressure.

What the Researchers Studied

The investigators evaluated 28 professional female players from Mexico’s top league. Each athlete completed psychological assessments measuring:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Emotional regulation
  • Emotional awareness

They also completed a battery of neuropsychological tests examining executive function, including measures of planning, working memory, cognitive flexibility, inhibition, and decision-making.

Rather than asking whether “good players are happier,” the researchers wanted to understand whether emotional functioning and cognitive performance were connected.

Players Who Paid More Attention to Their Emotions Made Better Decisions

Perhaps the most interesting finding involved decision-making. Players with higher scores on emotional attention tended to perform better on the Iowa Gambling Task, a classic decision-making test that rewards balancing risk and reward.

The relationship wasn’t enormous (rho = 0.36), and the authors appropriately caution that the confidence interval crossed zero, meaning larger studies are needed. Still, another finding was stronger: athletes with greater emotional attention selected fewer risky choices during the task (rho = –0.47, p = 0.01).

That doesn’t necessarily mean cautious players become better soccer players.

Instead, it suggests that athletes who are more aware of their emotional state may make more measured decisions when consequences matter.

On the field, that could translate into knowing when to force a difficult pass—and when to recycle possession instead.

Mood Also Appeared to Affect Working Memory

The study also found that higher depression scores were associated with slower initiation on a working memory task (rho = 0.38, p = 0.04). Working memory is one of soccer’s hidden superpowers. It allows players to remember:

  • where teammates were positioned moments earlier,
  • how defenders are shifting,
  • what tactical instruction was just given,
  • and what the next passing option is likely to be.

Anything that slows these processes—even slightly—could influence performance during fast transitions.

The authors emphasize that these findings do not establish causation, but they reinforce growing evidence that psychological well-being and cognitive performance are closely connected.

Interestingly, Anxiety Wasn’t the Story

Many coaches assume anxiety is the biggest psychological challenge athletes face. This study found something more nuanced.

Although the professional players reported moderate anxiety levels overall, anxiety itself showed no significant relationship with the executive function tests that were administered.

That doesn’t mean anxiety never affects performance. Instead, it suggests that emotional awareness and regulation may be more informative than anxiety scores alone when trying to understand how athletes think during competition.

Why This Matters for Players

Most players already train their bodies nearly every day. Far fewer deliberately train the mental skills that influence decision-making. This study suggests players should think about emotional regulation the same way they think about strength training.

Recognizing frustration after a bad pass. Resetting after conceding a goal. Avoiding emotional reactions after a referee’s decision. Remaining mentally flexible when a game plan changes. These aren’t simply “soft skills.” They may help support better decisions under pressure.

What Coaches Can Do

The practical takeaway isn’t that coaches should become therapists. Instead, coaches can build environments that improve emotional regulation alongside technical development.

Decision-making drills become more valuable when players experience realistic pressure. Small-sided games with time constraints, changing rules, or score deficits force athletes to regulate emotions while making tactical decisions.

Post-training reflection can also become part of player development. Rather than only reviewing tactical mistakes, coaches can ask players what they were feeling before a poor decision or how they recovered mentally after an error.

Creating a team culture where mistakes are treated as learning opportunities rather than personal failures may also reduce emotional overload during matches.

Mental resilience, like technical skill, improves through repetition.

What Clubs Should Learn

For clubs, the findings support a broader approach to player development. Elite organizations increasingly view performance as the interaction of physical, tactical, technical, and psychological systems rather than separate domains.

That means investing in sports psychology, educating coaches about emotional regulation, monitoring player well-being throughout long seasons, and ensuring athletes have access to appropriate mental health resources.

The study does not suggest routine psychological screening should determine roster decisions. Instead, it highlights opportunities to support players before emotional challenges begin affecting performance.

Healthy players tend to be more consistent players.

The Study’s Important Limitations

The authors are refreshingly careful about what their results do—and do not—show.

Only 28 professional players from one Mexican club participated, making this an exploratory study rather than definitive evidence. There was no comparison group of amateur players or non-athletes, and factors such as sleep, fatigue, training load, recent matches, concussion history, and menstrual cycle phase were not systematically measured. Multiple statistical tests were also performed without correction, increasing the possibility that some findings occurred by chance.

Future research involving larger samples across multiple clubs and leagues will be needed to determine how robust these relationships really are.

The Future of Soccer May Be Between the Ears

Soccer has become faster every decade. Players now have less time to think, less time to react, and less margin for emotional mistakes. This study adds to growing evidence that emotional regulation is not separate from performance—it may be one of the systems that helps shape it. Elite soccer will always require speed, technique, and fitness. But increasingly, it appears the players who make the best decisions under pressure may also be the ones who understand—and manage—their own emotions most effectively.
