Why Better Dribblers Are Usually Better Passers (But Not for the Reason You Think)

If you’ve ever watched an elite midfielder effortlessly receive the ball, beat pressure, and thread a perfect pass, you’ve probably wondered:

Are great passers simply great dribblers?

A new observational study involving 242 elite academy players (U14–U19) suggests the answer is yes—but only partially. While dribbling ability, passing skill, and agility are all related, the connections are much weaker than many coaches might expect.

That finding reinforces an important lesson for player development:

Technical skills matter, but soccer intelligence may matter even more.

What Did Researchers Study?

Researchers evaluated players from four professional academies using three standardized performance tests:

  • Illinois Agility Test (IAT): change-of-direction speed
  • Illinois Dribbling Test (IDT): agility while controlling the ball
  • Loughborough Passing Test (LPT): passing accuracy combined with decision-making

The study included players from U14 through U19 representing defenders, midfielders, and strikers. Researchers wanted to determine:

  • Whether passing, dribbling, and agility are related
  • Whether those skills differ by position
  • How they change throughout adolescence

Dribbling and Agility Go Hand-in-Hand

Perhaps the least surprising result: Players who dribbled better also tended to be more agile.

The relationship was moderately strong (r = 0.48)—the strongest connection observed in the study.

That makes intuitive sense. Changing direction while maintaining close ball control requires:

  • balance
  • coordination
  • acceleration
  • deceleration
  • body control

Improving one likely benefits the other.

Passing Was Related to Dribbling—But Only Weakly

Researchers also found:

  • Better dribblers tended to be better passers
  • Better agility was also associated with passing

However, both relationships were relatively weak. Specifically:

  • Dribbling vs. passing: r = 0.23
  • Agility vs. passing: r = 0.15

That means technical ability explains only a small portion of passing performance.

Why?

Because successful passing depends on much more than striking technique. Players must constantly:

  • scan the field
  • recognize pressure
  • anticipate movement
  • select the correct option
  • execute quickly

Those perceptual and tactical skills aren’t captured by simple agility tests.

Midfielders Came Out on Top

The study also found clear positional differences. Compared with defenders, midfielders demonstrated:

  • faster dribbling
  • better passing performance

Strikers generally fell between the two groups. This reflects the unique demands of midfield play. Central midfielders spend far more time:

  • receiving under pressure
  • manipulating the ball in tight spaces
  • making rapid passing decisions

It’s exactly the type of environment that rewards technical proficiency.

Players Improved With Age

As expected, older academy players generally outperformed younger ones. Researchers observed:

  • better agility
  • improved dribbling
  • stronger passing performance

Interestingly, several improvements appeared to plateau after approximately U17–U19, suggesting some technical capacities stabilize during late adolescence.

That doesn’t mean development stops. Instead, gains may increasingly come from:

  • tactical awareness
  • decision-making
  • game understanding
  • experience

rather than raw technical improvements.

Here’s the Most Interesting Finding

Researchers used both agility and dribbling scores to predict passing ability. Together they explained only 5.7% of the differences in passing performance. That’s remarkably small.

In other words: More than 94% of what separates passing performance comes from something else.

The authors suggest likely contributors include:

  • perception
  • decision-making
  • tactical understanding
  • cognitive processing
  • contextual game factors

For coaches, that’s an important reminder.

Cone drills alone won’t produce elite passers.

What This Means for Coaches

The study supports a more integrated approach to player development. Instead of treating technical skills separately, training sessions should combine:

  • dribbling
  • passing
  • movement
  • perception
  • decision-making

Small-sided games, directional possession exercises, and game-realistic constraints may better replicate the cognitive demands players actually face during matches. The findings also suggest standardized testing batteries can help monitor development—but should never be the sole basis for talent identification.

The Bottom Line

Elite youth soccer players who dribble well generally pass well—but not simply because of superior foot skills. Passing excellence appears to emerge from a combination of:

  • technical ability
  • movement quality
  • tactical awareness
  • decision-making
  • game intelligence

The best young players aren’t just faster or more skillful. They’re processing the game faster, too.
